Promoting Leadership Skills within Grades 5 and 6

Are your students aware of the skills needed to be a leader? Do they have those skills? YMCA Ballarat has developed a specialty leadership and personal development program for students in grades five and six, to bring out those skills.

YMCA Ballarat has developed a specialty leadership and personal development program for students in grades five and six, designed to promote leadership skills and aid personal development.

The program developed by YMCA brings out those skills in a way the students can relate to and allows students to see and experience the core concepts of leadership and teambuilding. The debriefing after each activity encourages the students to identify good leadership practices and teamwork and teaches them how to diplomatically implement these practices.         

The ideal timing for these sessions would be either in term four for the grade five students to prepare them for their final year of primary school or in term one the following year as new grade six students as it helps to prepare them for their final year at the school and to think a little more seriously about the election of the school leaders.

Some pre-session preparation by the teaching staff in the form of poster making and discussion groups helps to attain the correct mind set for the sessions.
